Forest Glen is a small community on the Northwest side of Chicago that encompasses Edgebrook, Sauganash and Wildwood. One of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, the local motto is “Chicago’s Finest Community.” Forest Glen boasts the convenience of the city with the peacefulness of the suburbs, and it’s known for its community involvement and friendly neighbors.

History

The area that is now Forest Glen was originally inhabited by Pottawatomie Native Americans who migrated their because of its forests and natural resources. After the Fort Dearborn massacre, Native Americans were forced to leave the area and the first man to claim the area was Billy Caldwell. (Caldwell’s Indian name was Sauganash.)

The second owner was Captain William Hazelton who acquired the land in his Civil War settlement. He cultivated the land and built a house and barn on what is now Lawler and Foster Avenue. He helped to develop the area and became the chief supplier of cherries for the Chicago market.

Transportation

Forest Glen has a METRA stop along the Milwaukee District North Line. There is also an Edgebrook stop on the same line. Forest Glen is also accessible from the Edens Expressway.

Forest Glen has a number Chicago Transit Authority bus routes available, as well as the Blue Line.

Entertainment

The neighborhood’s Patio Theater boasts the largest single screen in Chicagoland, residing under a simulated blue sky with flickering lights and moving clouds. It’s a second-run movie theater that originally opened in 1927.

The Forest Glen Community Club hosts events, farmer’s markets and parties throughout the year.

Outdoor Recreation

Caldwell Woods, named for Billy Caldwell, consists of forested wetlands and bottomlands representing some of the best natural habitat on the Chicago River. The area provides picnic areas, hiking trails and excellent bird watching.

Residents can practice their golf game at the 18-hole Edgebrook Golf Course or the nine-hole Billy Caldwell Golf Course. Both are located within the area’s forest preserves.
